CRIS i.e. Centre of Railway Information Systems maintain a database where all information about passengers are fed and stored on daily basis. The system creates a unique 10-digit PNR number every time a person books a railway ticket, no matter offline or online. With that particular number passenger can check all relevant information about his/her journey.
